JULY 2007 NEWSLETTER
Looks like we are probably the only people benefiting from recent dreadful weather ie the reservoir is nearly full to the brim – let’s hope we get lots of favourable wind to help us use it!
First of all Gerry Brown, who overseas the ood’s has sent the following to try and clarify a few points. Please do put your names down for ood duty, as racing on Sundays depends upon a full list. There are plenty of people willing to help you if you are not sure about volunteering. Gerry would put you in contact with someone so they can show you the ropes. If very Sunday sailor did a slot, Gerry’s life would be so much easier!!
MESSAGE FROM GERRY BROWN TO ALL SUNDAY SAILORS
“As some members don’t know how the ood duty roster system works I’ve listed below some of the points/queries which have arisen.
1 This method of ‘choosing’ ood’s has not changed for several years and has been used by all those who have been ood!
2 Near the end of the sailing season a calendar of the following year is put up onto the club notice board, so that those members who have sailed and raced on a Sunday can volunteer for next year by putting their name down when they feel it would cause them the least inconvenience on their chosen date as they sometimes know in advance what events etc they will have next year. To those who do this every year I would like to take this opportunity to thank you as this makes arranging the ood list much easier.
3 Invariably everyone who has raced does not put their name on the list! As this gives several dates when there would not be an ood I sometimes know who has sailed and not put their name down, I also ask the fleet captains for names. I try to give some of the ‘put upon’ regulars a break (or more likely use them when I am desperate for an ood).
4 I then put these names into the calendar. As I do not know what commitments for other events or anything else they have made, these dates can clash with other commitments. But I need to put names in dates!
5 It is then up to every individual who has taken part in a Sunday race to see when they are down to carry out an ood duty. I try to help by sending the oods emails or phoning them before their allotted duty but it is up to the individual to re-arrange any of these fixtures should they be unable to carry them out.
6 If swapping is necessary then the ood wishing to swap should (in plenty of time) try first swapping with someone in their own fleet. Should this be awkward due to, perhaps a fleet open somewhere to which several want to attend, then they should contact someone else on the ood duty list/calendar from another fleet. If ALL this fails then to contact me so that I can then try to get A.N.Other.
7 It would also be helpful if you do swap an ood duty to let me know.
8 I hope this explains, at least in part as to why your name is down on the roster and perhaps your need to swap dates. The simple and easier answer for everyone is PUT YOR NAME DOWN EARLY to get YOUR most suited date!!!!!”
REPLACING THE WINDOWS
This is planned for the end of August and we look forward to being able to open the door on the balcony with ease!!!!!
CLUB EVENTS
We have had a succession of very successful weekends at the Club in the past few weeks namely the GP14 Open, Open Day, Picnic by the Lake, National Windsurfing Championships and NE Youth Traveller event. All of these have had reports posted on the website www.drsc.co.uk and as you all have access to this I am not going to duplicate by writing reports here as it would make it a rather length e-mail. I would however like to thank all those members from the club who help out in any way at these events – your time and effort is very much appreciated by all.
MARKETING CO-ORDINATOR
We are still looking for someone to fill this position on Council. Anyone who would like to volunteer for this position or discuss its requirements should contact the Commodore, Roger Mole r.mole@ntlworld.com.
This is a very important role needing someone with some marketing experience and enthusiasm to promote the club. The roles and responsibilities can be viewed at the following address: www.drsc.co.uk/marketing.html
