DERWENT RESERVOIR SAILING CLUB

March Newsletter

Hi All

It’s Official the sailing season has now started so a BIG WELCOME to YOU ALL. This is a quick newsletter to update everyone, on what has been happening at Derwent as well as future plans.

Ladies, work is just about completed on the upgrade for the toilets, so come and check out the new facilities!

The recent meeting with Northumberland’s Health and Safety Inspector was very positive and complementary, especially comments about the Club’s documentation which is ‘excellent’. A BIG THANK YOU to last year’s Council for the Risk Assessments and the compilation by Adam Vaughan. Well done also to Ken Haig for keeping certification paperwork in order.

COUNCIL has a couple of changes, Maurice Cooper is now the On- Shore Services Co-ordinator and Jackie Gebhard has accepted the role as Volunteer Co-ordinator. If anyone is interested about being on Council please contact annpenny70@hotmail.com

It is always appreciated that members are willing to give their time to support the smooth running of the Club. Over the closed season numerous volunteers have helped with painting and in-house jobs. Please let us know if you are willing to help even in the smallest way. Members who are craftsmen and don’t particularly want to do their ’trade’ on days off, could be consultants…please contact Jackie.gebhard@trident-uk.com

The Access & Challenger Boats which had been left unloved
…were, given to the club in the late 1990s. The Access dinghy has been upside down, unused with bits missing, for the last 8 years at least. Shaun Billany has now offered to refurbish the boat, drying it out in his workshop, before patching and repairing can begin. DRSC has been very fortunate in obtaining £500 from the Tynedale Community Chest to help with the cost of refurbishing and replacing some missing equipment. The Access dinghy is a single seater, steered by a joystick arrangement. The centreboard is extremely heavy, as is the rudder, so capsizing is almost impossible.

The Challenger trimaran was used until about five or six years ago but has been sitting unloved and neglected since then. All the parts are there, including a spare centreboard. This boat needs someone to take some interest in it and do some refurbishing too. The cost to the club will be minimal, to the member nil except for time.

Both these boats, will be an asset for less able members/potential members, to enjoy the thrill of sailing with virtually no risk of capsize. Barbara Darling is co-ordinating this project on behalf of DRSC.

DRSC are now the proud owners of 3 Teras and 3 Oppies, which need naming. See the website for details of the competition. These boats will be available for hire as well as being used for Junior Sessions.

Would you like to be part of the Training Team? Des Topping and John Ledger are always keen to train sailors to become assistant instructors. You may already be qualified and wanting to get involved. RYA Training is a great source of income for the Club. With a bigger pool of instructors and assistants more courses could be offered. It is also an opportunity to develop your own skills and be part of a team. Contact d.topping@drsc.co.uk or john.janine@talktalk.net

SHRIMPS – no not to eat and we don’t want them at DRSC – check out information on the website! Sailors, who travel, please ensure your boat is hosed prior to going on the water at Derwent, Ken Haig will assist.
