Flying Fifteen Fleet at Derwent Reservoir
Fleet Captain: Robin Jefferson
email: DrRobin@freeuk.com
The Flying Fifteen was designed by Uffa Fox in 1947 and whilst the basic design has changed very little the construction and materials used have changed considerably. The Flying Fifteen is a Bermuda rigged boat with a spinnaker and carriers a crew of two. A fixed keel with 150Kg of weight ensures that the boat stays upright under most conditions. Unlike many dinghies, out and out speed is not the only factor to win as they are also a very tactical boat, ensuring that close racing can be fun across a wide age and skill range. For cruising the FF15 remains a very stable boat capable of carrying 3 adults in relative comfort.
The DRSC Flying Fifteen fleet numbers 28 boats ranging from new fibre glass boats to older wooden decked boats. We enjoy good competitive racing on Sundays and Wednesday evenings with fleets up to 10 boats. Silver fleet boats enjoy a 2 minute head start over the more modern faster boats. The fleet holds an [internal] open meeting every year in September and we encourage boats from outside the club to participate.
We dry sail at Derwent and have a large dinghy park with easy access to two main slipways and a slipway jetty.
