The GP 14 has been around for more than 50 years, yet still remains a popular boat.
At the World Championships in 2003 at Abersoch in Wales it had an entry of over 170 boats.
Here at Derwent it continues to be a thriving fleet boat, which matches the needs of many different sailors.
The GP 14 enables newcomers to sailing to have the security of a relatively stable boat, yet for the more experienced it allows tactical racing, with the challenge of flying a symmetric spinnaker.
GP 14 boats tend to hold their price, however as they have been around for some years, prices range from as little as £500 for a Series 1, and up to £7,000 for a Series 2. Boats being available in either wood or ‘plastic’.
Members in the GP14 Fleet at Derwent, enjoy Fleet Racing on Wednesday evenings and 3 races on a Sunday.
Fun events are often organised on Saturdays. In fact it is very rare not to see a GP 14 on the water; either racing, cruising or training.
As a Fleet we have a laugh both on and off the water. We also appreciate not all family members want to sail but do enjoy the social ‘get-togethers’. Activities include;- go-karting; walks; ski-ing; quiz and games nights; sail and disco on the Tyne; Fleet Dinner Dances; Christmas Party and Meals out.
For the more dedicated sailors;- race training sessions; travelling to other clubs to Open Events and Team Racing.
We are a friendly Fleet with most GP14 sailors being very willing to help less experienced people and even take them out for a sail.
If you are considering buying a GP 14 or would like to be considered as a crew, or would just like a sail, simply give me a call and I will endeavour to help
