The Topper Topaz is a versatile boat. Designed in 1998, it has a modern hull profile and can be sailed with a variety of rigs (seven), which makes it suitable for everyone from kids and beginners up to experienced sailors who just want to have fun.
Sailing Topaz Uno Race on a windy day is an experience which will leave a big grin on the face of most people.
The Derwent Topaz Fleet is one of the largest in the country (20 boats last season) and the sailors vary from keen racers to families out on a Saturday afternoon with the kids.
A boat can be bought new for £2500 or second hand for around £1200 (no cheap ones about yet) but they keep their value. They need no maintenance other than replacing the occasional rope or sail and they are as tough as anything. An older boat is as fast as a new one.
We have coaching events and try to encourage racing as a way to improve sailing skills.
