SEPTEMBER 2007 NEWSLETTER
A few reminders of events coming up and also some appeals for volunteers for Council.
SATURDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER 2007
There’s lots going on this weekend – besides Handicap Racing there’s:
MSDS RS200 OPEN MEETING
This Saturday sees the RS200 Open Meeting at Derwent. We hope to see as many RS 200s on the water plus staying over (camping available) to sail on Sunday. On Saturday evening all are welcome to join the fun and games plus dancing to a Disco. So let's see you there supporting the Club - and bring your friends!
SUPER 8 WINDSURFING EVENT
We also welcome all windsurfers to take part in the Super 8 Windsurfing event which takes place on the same day. There were quite a number of Derwent windsurfers taking part last year so I hope that we’ll see the same this year. You don’t need to be a “super” sailor just able to get from one mark to another. It’s great fun – I did it last year and thought it was brilliant! A great day’s windsurfing and a disco on the evening – what more could you ask for – so come on you windsurfers?
ADVANCE NOTICE – 40TH ANNIVERSARY BONFIRE PARTY
SATURDAY 3RD NOVEMBER 2007
Last year’s event was a great night and raised £1200. Let’s see if we can raise even more money this year. Ticket are £5 – that’s fun and games for the children, bonfire and fireworks and finishing off with a brilliant band we had for this year’s Picnic by the Lake, The Acoustic Beatles. The Galley will be open selling hot dogs etc. Try the link on the website where you can listen to their music and see reviews. We need you to sell as many tickets as possible to family and friends (plus yourselves of course!) – more information soon – so put it in your diary and spread the word.
SADLY MISSED
The sad news of June's death at her home in Gairloch was announced in August. June was a founder member of Derwent Reservoir SC and designed the club burgee. As June Davis she was Head of Art at Whitley Bay High School where she also encouraged her students to take up sailing. Along with Peter Roe, still a member at DRSC, Geoff Walton, who still lives in Throckley, and several others, the Northumberland School Sailing Association was formed and operated for many years using the current Training store hut as its base, acquiring boats and equipment.
June was also a member at Royal Northumberland Yacht Club and was generous in her time there teaching young sailors and encouraging them to join clubs, including Derwent.
She married a Flying Fifteen sailor from DRSC John Miller and they eventually moved to Scotland.
CLUBHOUSE WINDOWS
For those of you who have not been up to the club lately, just letting you know that the double glazing to the front of the clubhouse is almost complete. It looks absolutely fabulous – come up and see!
DRSC COUNCIL
Laura Fielding, our present Company Secretary is moving to south of England shortly. We would like to thank Laura for the work she has done as a Council member and wish her all the best down south.
