Over 200 Topper sailors travelled to Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club last weekend for one of the biggest sailing events to be held in the region this year. Sailors travelled from as far afield as Northern Ireland, Scotland , Wales and the South Coast for the second of a major national series of Topper racing.

This prestigious event was also classed as a qualifying event for young sailors trying to achieve a place in one of the RYA National Junior Training Squads and ITCA (GBR) Junior Development and Youth Squads, so the event attracted a top class entry.

The event also attracted Sailors in the Topper 4.2 Class sailed by lighter sailors and sponsored by Sailing Solutions. Unfortunately the weather was not kind with Saturdays distinct lack of wind leading to cancelled racing for the day. Visitors could at least enjoy the sunshine and evening Quiz whilst hoping for better breeze.

Sunday dawned with similar flat calm conditions with the forecast of further light winds. A postponed start to racing led to the fleet setting out at lunchtime hoping for at least three races to be held, the minimum number of races needed to count for the weekend series.

Setting the course proved difficult with shifty light winds leading to several postponements and course changes until the wind settled. When racing did eventually get underway the fleet were too anxious on the first start of the weekend leading to a general recall and restart.

The dreaded Black Flag was subsequently unfurled meaning that any sailor over the line 1 minute before the start would be disqualified for that race. Eventually the first race did get away cleanly only to be quickly abandoned due to a sudden drop in the wind and a big shift!

In the afternoon the weather closed in with low cloud and eventually rain setting in but the breeze did eventually settle after a further abandoned race to get three fair races in.

The event was won by Reuben Murphy from Portishead S.C. tied on overall points but beating Henry Cunnison of Emsworth Slipper S.C.in second by virtue of a win in race 2. Jamie Purcell from Redsmere came third with Danielle Thomas the first girl sailor from Calshot & Royal Lymington Yacht Club in 4th.

The 4.2 event was won by Joseph Mullan from Priory Sailing Club with Halden Neilsen- Timms from Redesdale S.C. in 2nd followed by Joanne Foster from Loch Tummel in 3rd.

ITCA Chairman Charles Glover thanked the club and all concerned for such a friendly, well organised and successful event. Prizes were presented by DRSC Commodore Ann Penny with a vote of thanks being given by winner Reuben Murphy.
