RYA Volvo Champion Club
Environmental Challenge
Along with all other VCC’s, DRSC was invited to enter the Challenge.
A two part project was offered.
|
1.
|
Collecting plastic bottles and tin cans for recycling, and keep the site rubbish free.
|
|
2.
|
Monitor and log sightings of any mammal, bird, reptile, insect especially bumble bees, creepy crawlies, special plants including the weeds which last year were thought to be going to be a problem; collate and disseminate data collected; have a family based Blue/Green fun day and generally enhance the awareness of club members to our environment.
|
DRSC was awarded one of the few Awards of £500 to help finance the project.
Several families had a lovely visit to the Volvo Garage in Hexham during half term week when the cheque was presented.
Since then a TV wildlife presenter and photographer has asked to come to DRSC and some old recipes from the 1920s have been discovered which use some of the weeds which grow in our northern Pennine valleys and these are now on the Blue/Green website!
Special bins have been placed in various places around the club; more may be needed.
A file is on the shelf in the south lobby for recording anything in the flora and fauna world. Please, please, write in what you spot. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what it is. Somebody else will. Just describe it.
We hope to get some posters illustrating some of the things that may be seen. Reference books too may be bought.
We sail and relax in a unique part of the country in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) with many rare, threatened and exciting species all around us.
Keep your eyes open!
DRSC is expected to produce some statistics and results.
Any offers of help will be immensely appreciated and it is hoped that a team will be developed to progress the project; several members have already been a huge help and it was their suggestions which helped DRSC gain this award.
