Junior Training 2022
Published 14:46 on 25 Mar 2022
The junior team are in the process of sorting the junior sessions starting in April. We shall publish the details to book as soon as we are able.
To support junior training we need more volunteers. Any experienced sailing kids ( age >14) interested in helping out any Sundays in April, please let one of the junior sailing team know. (Junior@drsc.co.uk) This will be great experience for those wanting to develop skills in preparation for Instructor Course.
We are looking for adult helpers with sailing experience to help out on Sat afternoons, please email (Junior@drsc.co.uk)
We are very excited to see all the kids who started sailing last year in our intermediate sessions and welcoming any new sailors to our junior family in our beginner sessions. If your children are keen to sail, please can I encourage you to sign up in April as we know from last year that our instructor availability is much better in April/ May (so they will get more opportunities to sail over the sailing season). Anyone who joined our onboard training last year should sign up for the intermediate groups, where we will be working through the RYA levels.
To begin with please only sign up for one block per month, if under subscribed then we will offer it out for anyone wishing to book a second one.
As members, the sessions will need parent support with rigging boats, helpers in the rib, launching boats and ensuring everything is put away at the end of sessions/ day. As members this is not the instructors' responsibility but ours as a community.
The sessions that we offer will be set up based on instructor availability.
As an RYA onboard club these sessions need to fulfil all their criteria before a session can be arranged. Please remember that their is a huge amount of volunteer hours that are invested in the provision of the junior sessions.Because of instructor availability the sessions that we offer may run in different length blocks, may change between blocks from Sundays to Saturdays and have gaps between the end of one block and the beginning of the other. We know from last year that June's instructor availability was limited, a lot of our instructors are at University and this month coincides with their exams. We will endeavour to maximise what we can provide throughout the season but we will have to go with what's available at the time.
In April we are trying to offer training both on some Saturdays and Sundays- but again it won't necessarily be the same offer both days.
You can see the sessions that have been scheduled for April on the website.
Sailors who have RYA Stage 3, or equivalent experience (e.g. Have participated in class association winter training) can join our race training program on Saturday afternoons.
The junior team may need to adjust the groups depending on the uptake, to help optimise the groups based on abilities or if uptake in some groups means that sessions need to be combined.
Thank you,
The Junior Sailing Team
