What to expect:

These two hour sessions aim to give the budding sailors a start in their sailing life. Time will be spent on land and on the water, adapting to suit the conditions of the day, with both theory and practice.

They will follow a sailing syllabus which includes

  • Sailing techniques and manoeuvres,
  • Meteorology and recognising the effect it will have,
  • Vocabulary of sailing
  • The principles of sailing.
  • Maybe learn to capsize,

The groups will be organised at a ratio of one coach and possibly an assistant coach to six beginners. We may sail an assortment of dinghies and the coaches may be in a power boat alongside the sailing boats and sailors may take it in turns to swap in and out of boats.

We hope to show what fun sailing at Derwent Reservoir can be. Parents and other family members could even make use of the club's half day or day membership to get active on the water themselves. Participants are welcome to make use of the facilities and grounds as CoVid restrictions allow after the sessions (the club house and galley which we hope will soon be open for hot food, sandwiches and refreshments).

Sailors will need the following equipment:

  • Wetsuit or drysuit
  • Wetsuit boots or old trainers that can get wet
  • Suncream
  • Hat, either to keep you warm or to keep the sun off
  • Waterproof clothing to change into as theory may be outside in the weather

Boats and life jackets will/can be provided. (Note: sometimes second hand kit is available on the club website 'For Sale' pages.)

The changing rooms will not be open for the first few sessions (due to CoVid restrictions), so please arrive in wetsuits. Sailors can change in the car park afterwards.

Contact David Shilling at junior@drsc.co.uk with any questions or to register interest in learning to sail outside the target age range.

To book: pay £100 online
