Information For New Members
Whether you are a looking for a new family experience or some relaxation from a busy job then sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding and/or open water swimming are brilliant ways to spend some quality time.
If you are already into water sports we can offer so much here at Derwent in the way of training, racing and of course socials.
At Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club, we have one of the best sailing areas in the country with a reservoir 3.5 miles long surrounded by beautiful scenery, set in an area of outstanding national beauty. The Club which is easily accessible from Newcastle Upon Tyne, Durham and Hexham sits in countryside which offers great opportunities to not only access the water, but to enjoy walks or bike rides, with Blanchland a very pretty village a short bike ride away.
Our extensive grounds, provide lots of grassy areas for children to play, we even have an area with swings. Adults can enjoy sitting at one of the picnic tables around the site or at the barbecue area, while the children play on or off the water.
Tarmac access to our boat park where we can berth up to 400 boats, leads on to five slipways or the jetty for easy launching.
The Clubhouse offers ground floor level changing facilities and showers. Upstairs there is a large seating area overlooking the reservoir, to enable you to watch the water activities in comfort. On this level we have our bar which is manned by volunteers and our galley ran as a franchise and open when the Club is open, serving home-cooked food, Sunday lunch being a specialty.
There are RYA Sailing Courses organised throughout the season for adults, with opportunities for further development on subsequent courses often organised by our Derwent Fleet Captains. Courses are regularly ran for our junior members. The focus for all training being on having fun on the water, whilst improving skills.
On Wednesday evenings and Sundays there is racing for the various fleets and handicap racing is available on Saturday afternoons. It isn't essential to own a boat, as the Club has boats which can be 'borrowed', to help get you started. Alternatively as a member there are sometimes opportunities to crew for someone, which will help you to gain experience. Click on the 'Fleets' link to see more information about what boats are sailed and check out 'Crews needed to Race', for a chance to meet a member and get a sail.
Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club is also an RYA OnBoard club, catering for juniors who want to learn how to sail.
Training for windsurfing has been re-established and last year proved to be very exciting and successful with many people coming along for sessions and becoming "hooked". In the first instances all the kit is provided in the lessons with information being available about what boards/rigs to buy and what clothing etc is needed if you wish to progress. On Sunday afternoons we run a Team 15 club for youngsters 7 - under 16.
We have a growing fleet of windsurfers of all abilities from beginners to blasters! There are plans to have some windsurf racing next season mainly for the beginners at first but who knows it may become a feature if we get the interest.
