Open Water Swimming Sunday Morning

Swimming Code of Conduct

DROWS has an agreement with Northumbria Water and DRSC to use the water for swimming during the following times: Wednesday 18:00 to 20:00, Saturday and Sunday mornings from 10:00 to 12:00. The club is run entirely by volunteers who give their own time to ensure a great experience is had by all. For more details on volunteering at the club, please talk to one of the organisers.

All new attendees must sign up to this code of conduct prior to swimming.

Please note swimming is not permitted at any other time unless it's an event organised by DROWS.

All swimmers must be able to swim 500m (20 lengths x 25m) in a pool without stopping, before swimming in the reservoir.
All swimmers must be a minimum of 12 years of age (proof of age may be required).
You must sign in on arrival either in the Clubhouse or at the water's edge, you will then be tallied before entering the water.
As soon as you exit the water you must tally out so the safety personnel in charge know you are out safely
All swimmers must treat other swimmers in the reservoir with respect, especially taking into account the broad range of abilities. This is not a race environment, swimming over other swimmers will result in you being asked to leave the water by the safety crew and no refunds will be given.
Wetsuits are compulsory, unless you have a tow float or can prove you are training for a cross channel swim (all cross-channel swim qualifiers must be agreed at least a week in advance of the session with the swimming committee).
Bright coloured swim hats are compulsory (not black or silver), preferably bright green, red, orange or yellow.
For your own safety, it is advised that you swim in pairs or small groups, especially if you are not overly confident or experienced in open water swimming.
Swim in an anti-clockwise direction and keep the buoys to your left at all times, unless you have agreed with tallying and safety to swim against the shoreline.
Keep a lookout for other swimmers and stay alert at all times.
When entering the water keep a look out for any object that may cause you harm.
Minor cuts and abrasions must be covered up with a plaster. If you have deep cuts do not swim.
Please do not swim if you are unwell.
If you become unwell after open water swimming, please contact your GP and state you have been swimming in open water.
Try not to ingest any water and after swimming it is good practice not to eat anything until you have washed your hands.
If at any point you get into trouble while swimming, roll onto your back, wave and shout for the attention of the safety kayaks/boat or the land based safety crew.
Note, we as a club do not test for water quality.

As with all sports there is a small risk of injury, in the event of an emergency please provide contact details and any allergy/medical information. This information will be held for the duration of the swimming season and for the sole purpose of an emergency, details will only be passed to medical professionals if requested. During the swim season your details will be held securely both in paper and electronic form, they will not be used for any marketing purpose and at the end of the season will be destroyed by a professional data-shred company and electronically erased.

Risk Statement
It must be recognised that open water swimming is by its nature an unpredictable sport and therefore inherently involves an element of risk. By taking part in the open water swimming at Derwent reservoir, you agree and acknowledge that:

1) You are aware of the inherent risk involved in the sport and accept responsibility for exposing yourself to such inherent risk whilst taking part in the swim session;
2) You will comply at all times with the instructions of the safety team;
3) You accept responsibility for any injury, damage or loss to the extent caused by your own negligence;
4) You will not participate in a swim event or session whilst your ability to swim is impaired by alcohol, drugs or whilst otherwise unfit to participate;
5) The provision of patrol boat or kayak cover is limited to such assistance as can be practically provided in the circumstances.

DRSC and DROWS will hold your details for the duration of the swimming season.

We reserve the right to cancel the event at short notice due to circumstances out of our control, such as adverse weather. In the event of a cancellation due to these circumstances, we will refund tickets. Refunds not normally given.


Intermediate open water skills (1hr):
Aim: To further the skills of swimmers already confident in open water. Relaxed breathing, efficient sighting techniques, pack swimming, drafting, faster buoy turns, techniques for swimming in adverse weather conditions, deep water starts. This session may be altered according to the needs of each group of swimmers. This session will focus on front crawl technique.

Safety Volunteer Authorised swimmers only allowed to book this ticket. You need to have volunteered at least 3 times this season.
Unauthorised bookings will be cancelled. Contact Sue Green or Ray Kelly to be added to the authorised list.
