Entry for the Northern Junior Championships 2024 at Derwent Reservoir SC on 22/23 June is now open.

Racing is available for Optimist, RS Tera Sport, RS Tera Pro, Topper, RS Feva and ILCA4 and sailors must be under the age of 19 on 1 September 2024.

There will be main fleet racing, a coached regatta fleet and a rookie club for sailors who are not yet experienced enough for the regatta fleet.

The Notice of Race & other event information is available on the Event Notice Board and entry is via the DRSC website. You can stay on site and there will be some social activities in the evenings. The organisers are putting together an information pack to support the notice of race with information about shore practicalities (camping & catering etc), this will be published to the website event notice board as soon as it is available.

Entry will be open from 18:00hrs on Sunday 12 May 2024 and closes on Friday 14 June.

This event is being organised as a partnership by North East & Yorkshire Youth Sailing and Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club with the support of a large team of volunteers from the region, more volunteers are needed and information on how to volunteer will be issued shortly. Capacity at the event is limited by the safety fleet so if you have, or know of, a RIB that could potentially be loaned for the event please contact us via info.neyysa@gmail.com.

The event is only happening thanks to the enthusiasm, commitment and positive contributions from many people in the region working together for the benefit of regional junior and youth sailing and whilst it is still early in the event planning, many hours have already been spent making plans and putting arrangements in place. The organisers recognise that some youth & junior sailors are not going to be able to participate in their favoured class due to the limit on class options, we hope that they will understand that given the time limitations presented for arranging this event, it hasn't been possible to include them this time but it is something the region welcomes a discussion about for the future as ensuring inclusive opportunities for all young sailors is a key goal for everyone.

For sailors and families who aren't familiar with this event, this event is being organised to replace the RYA Regional Junior Championship and will reflect many of the core values of British Youth Sailing but will also hopefully encompass the enthusiasm and joy regional sailors and their clubs have for the sport and will have a fun, festival atmosphere weekend on and off the water as well as offering competitive sailing for the main and regatta fleet participants.

The main fleet will provide fleet racing for all the main junior classes and will be closely fought at the front with many of the "regional names" already indicating their intention to compete. This fleet is suitable for anyone who is racing regularly in the North East & Yorkshire or North West Youth Traveller series main fleets, at national events or regularly racing at their home club. It will also be a welcoming and supportive place for those venturing into the main fleet for the first time, the front runners were newbies once too.

For sailors under the age of 16 who are still learning the racing basics, the regatta fleet is the place to be. The regatta fleet will have an experienced race officer over-seeing the racing but there will be a coach providing input and support to improve skills. Several of the region's young adult race coaches will also be supporting the regatta fleet.

For young sailors aged 7 -13 years with some basic sailing skills but not yet at the point to launch themselves into the regatta fleet, we will be running Rookie Club for fun & sailing focused games on & off the water. This will be led by an experienced team supported by parent volunteers. Sailors can participate in this with their own (suitable) boat, or use a DRSC club boat. Sailors must have their own buoyancy aid and sailing kit and be water confident.

Clubs are encouraged to bring all their youth & junior sailors for a weekend of competitive sailing, fun on the water, camaraderie, friendships old & new and the opportunity to celebrate our great sport together. Please consider how you can help your club get as many young sailors to the event as possible and if you have space on your trailer for someone else's boat, extend the hand of sailing friendship and bring them along with you and support a newer to sailing family as they clock their first travelling miles to this event.

We look forward to seeing you all at Derwent Reservoir in June for this event.

If you have any questions or queries about the event, please email NEYYSA or DRSC for more information.
