Racing is Back

10 sailors mustered on the lawn for a suitably distant briefing for the return of Sunday racing. On a rather calm and dull Sunday morning, this was more than might have been expected for a 10:30 brief. By the end of the morning competition had nearly doubled in size. The fast handicap decided to start with the slow. A trapezoidal course was agreed and the first official race at the club commenced 8 months since the last, just a few minutes late. It was a day for red sails, with three Mirrors on the water, with 8-10 knots providing safe conditions for those with families not too used to racing.

Congratulations to Paul Robinson (Mirror 70740) for a clean sweep of the three races, likewise to Andy Weatherspoon for the same outcome in the Supernova (1172) for the fast handicappers, although Paul also managed to beat him in Race 1 and 2 overall. The Donaldson brothers (Lasers 183242 and 17360) arrived only in time for the final race but put up a good fight - if they want to stand a chance of taking the series they will need to get out of bed a little earlier next week! There were more intra-family competitions with Millie and Toby Kidd fighting it out in their Optimists (5138 and 11) and James Catterall and Rebecca Green, in their new Feva (3984), taking on James' dad in the RS200. The 200 being helmed by Sean Billany was of course also trying to take family rankings from Adam in the 2.4. A solo, a streaker, a GP14 and a Laser Pico reminded us that it doesn't matter what you sail - under handicap racing you can all have a go. Race 2's result produced an interesting dead heat on corrected time for Paul and Tony King (Solo 5408)!

Want to have a go? Next Sunday Race starts at 11am next week. Be sure to register your attendance in advance (to help us plan the social distancing). Don't forget there is also Wednesday Racing from this week. The Galley is open for takeaway food too.
