Junior/Youth Training
Junior/Youth RYA Training sessions follow the RYA Onboard scheme, teaching students from 8 years old up to 18 years old. Beginning with Stage 1 and working through the modules to Stage 4. Each module is over 2 days (16 hours). All of the equipment is provided with students put into appropriate sailing boats and under the supervision of a qualified sailing instructor. Please note a parent or guardian is required to remain on site for Stage 1 and Stage 2 students.
Stage 1 students are taught basic boat handling skills, basic parts of a boat, how to launch and how to assist with stowage of their boat and gear.
Stage 2 builds on previous learning, with student's knowledge being extended as they learn how to rig, sail a triangular course and understand how to manoeuvre their boat.
Stage 3 develops sailing techniques and manoeuvres; how to sail in different wind conditions; the five essentials and an introduction to racing.
Stage 4 includes sailing a double-handed boat, as a crew or helm; effective use of the five essentials; righting a capsized dinghy as helm/crew; more ropework and meteorology.
The RYA Onboard programme provides the framework for progression. Students can and do, move on to advanced sailing with spinnakers and performance racing.
